Catahoula Leopard Dog Breed Information
What to Expect

These dogs need at least an hour of daily physical exercise and are great companions for active owners who enjoy running, hiking, or long walks. However, due to their tendency toward dog aggression and prey drive, they are not ideal for dog parks and should never be allowed off-leash. In addition to physical activity, Catahoulas need mental stimulation through interactive games, training, or sports. Without it, they can become bored and may develop destructive behaviors.

New Owner Info
Although Catahoula Leopard Dogs love the outdoors, they are not suited to being left outside alone. They crave companionship and need quality time with their human family. Crate training from an early age, along with treat-dispensing puzzle toys, can help keep them calm when left alone for short periods.
Highly intelligent and relatively easy to train, Catahoulas can be independent and stubborn at times. Consistency, patience, and a firm but fair approach are essential for earning their respect and obedience. They are eager to please and respond well to praise-based motivation.
Generally a hardy breed, Catahoulas have few health issues. Like many large dogs, they are prone to hip dysplasia, so responsible breeders should provide health clearances. Deafness, linked to the merle gene, is another concern, but hearing-impaired dogs can still live happy, fulfilling lives.
Their coat, which varies from smooth to coarse, naturally repels dirt and requires minimal grooming. Light shedding can be managed with weekly brushing, and baths are only needed when they get particularly dirty. Regular ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental care help maintain their overall health.
